- Amideon Systems Introduce MicroSense

When Shannon Airport’s perimeter was breached by a protester in 2004, $1.5 million in damage was caused to a US aircraft, but the embarrassment to Ireland was considered far more costly. Nexus Innovation Centre company, Amideon Systems believe they have the product that would have prevented this attack using revolutionary sensor technology.

Amideon Systems is a provider of advanced electronic solutions to the aerospace and civil security sectors.  Established in 2003, Amideon designs and builds products within its specialist areas of micro, millimetre and micro millimetre wave technology.

MicroSense is a pioneering new security system developed by the company. The product, a wireless microwave fence, creates an invisible barrier around a secure installation which will alert security to any unwanted intrusion. The product discriminates between background interference, such as passing vehicles or wildlife, and genuine intruders thus reducing the high level of false alarms associated with competitor offerings. The curtain- like beam can sit inside a conventional fence to add a further layer of protection to any facility. MicroSense can also connect to CCTV and when an alert is triggered a real- time image provides verification of an intrusion to security personnel.

Since first introduced in Russia, China, South Korea and South Africa airport and police authorities alike are keen to install this highly reliable perimeter security system. The product is currently targeted at critical infrastructure sites such as airports, nuclear power plants, prisons, military sites and petrochemical plants, all of which require a high level of protection

“Our system is preventative, whereas the majority are reactive and only inform you after the damage has been done” says Amideon CEO, Barry Lunn. Lunn revels that the future goal is an affordable off the shelf version of MicroSense available to home owners. “The front end software is completely cloud- based, meaning the system can be linked to the household’s existing wi-fi” says Lunn, a feature which is also unique to the market. A smartphone app is under development which will alert users to an intrusion on their property by sending an image of the location. The threat can be verified and further action taken or alternatively the alarm can then be disengaged remotely by the user.

The sensor technology behind MicroSense is completely novel within the field and the background IP is patent protected. Recently the technology received the prestigious 2011 IET Premium Award in the area of Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation.

MicroSense is a joint collaboration between Amideon and its sister company, LamhRoe, which is a spin out form Queens University Belfast.
